Ronnevik Family Session, 2017

Published: April 13th, 2017

One of my favorite things about photographing families is that I’m able to witness the ways that parents love and care for their children. And sometimes, it really is that easy to just be a witness casually observing a family that supports one another and provides a loving environment in which children can grow. That’s exactly how it was to photograph Karl and Jessica Ronnevik’s family.

Photographing young children is really all about placing them in a safe environment where they feel free to be who they are. As a stranger to most of the children that I work with, it’s important for me to get the parents involved in making that work. I’m careful to be as genuine and patient as I can because children can sense if you’re stressed and a great first impression is really critical.

The first half of our session was scheduled for a day when the weather was a little too cold for Sophia to go outside. I let Jessica make the call, but we decided to split it up into two days to make it easier on the children. Nobody looks like they’re having fun when they’re cold, anyway. We set up in the bedroom where we knew Peter and Sophia would feel comfortable.

Weeks later, when the weather was warm enough to go outside, we wrapped up the second half of our session. I really loved the colors that Jessica picked out, though she made it seem effortless. The layered sweaters made it easy to photograph some variety without having to go through the effort of completely changing everyone’s clothes.

Let me tell you that Peter and Sophia are pretty amazing. I know all kids are a handful, but when those smiles come out, it’s like magic. “Peter, show me your teeth!” was all that needed to be said.

Even Sophia smiled at me a few times. And let’s be honest, it’s easy to be happy when you’re sharing your favorite candy.

At the end of our session, I was thrilled to bring this beautiful family content back into my editing suite. I know that Karl and Jessica will enjoy sharing these with their family, and I’d love to talk to you about how we could create a session customized to fit your family.
